THE WORK

The work of Evan Deval is the result of an indefinite restlessness:

"I’ve always felt connected to Arts, in a wider sense (theatre, corporal expression, music…). When I start a work, I let myself wander, I observe, I transform. I take distance and I experiment. I feel grateful that I have this capacity."

For him, it is a kind of intimate confession, a universe populated by sinuous sculptures, anonymous figures that represent life scenes, under his discreet glance:

"My characters are a kind of self-portrait. Always in movement. A movement that is in all I do, even in the most subtle and imperceptible gestures."

His characters come out from a daily context, but at the same time singular. They emerge from a daily landscape, with soul and feeling, sensibility and euphoria.

"Value the routine, the day to day, the singular things that pass by unnoticed, but that are there (in the small things). We have to know how to grab them. It is the essence of our living. The favourable sum of small things generates the great. And what is great and really important is feeling fine with oneself."

He likes to play with diverse components, colours, materials and textures.

"Colours that remind me humid and fresh clay. Bright and white tones that bring tranquillity. Strong and primary colours of the Earth."

His technique, applied essentially to the wood, consists in a mixture of this material, and various paints. The textures he creates, are obtained through wood residues that mixed with paint, let appear volumes and renderings that seem to escape from the canvas.

"The wood residues are my main elements. I use them to create textures in my paintings. These residues that seem useless and valueless, worked properly, get importance and become central in my works."

"Everything has life, meaning and value..."

We can find sensual round ladies, canvassed with tenderness and happiness, as well as skinny figures, that sometimes walk out of the frames to become sculptures. And finally, wood mosaics (extraordinary patchworks).

The sculptures mix iron and wood giving a true meaning to the word “Fusion”. They follow the spirit of the paintings, but with a more robust aesthetic, made of weight and volume. They are made of recycled elements, found in the nature, especially wood stems. The iron is used to complement the structure and the composition of the work.

The Artist, very attached to the harmony of the space and the environment, creates furniture with pure lines, bringing impacting shapes and effects. Simplicity and functionality that favour moods: lamps, folding screens, tables, clothes stands…
